A Day in the Life of a Back to Top
Translators act as important forces within the nation’s education system. Over the years, the U.S. has turned into a melting pot of different cultures and languages. As a result, many parents and children are not native to this country and struggle to speak the language. Up to 42% of parents and children in the U.S. school system do not speak English. Professional translation has been the key determinant to help parents and children better understand what is happening in the classroom. In 2006 alone, New York City expanded its budget to a total of $12 million per year for translation and interpreter services for their public schools. The increasing demand and need for translators in many schools makes becoming a translator a worth while profession to look into.
To become a language translator, one must be bilingual or multilingual. In many job settings, a bachelor’s degree is required for any translating position. Translators must also possess excellent writing and analytical skills. Because the job may require translating documents in addition to language translation, it is important that they are able to translate documents accurately and precisely. Being a professional translator is not limited to being a Spanish translator, though Spanish is the second most common language in the U.S. Nevertheless, there are a wide range of different opportunities for language translation. In New York City, the following eight foreign languages are most common among parents: Spanish, Chinese, Urdu, Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, and Arabic. Finnish, French, Vietnamese, Yiddish, Portuguese, Russian, Danish, Hungarian, Serbian, Indonesian, Norwegian, and Polish are further languages that are translated for those who need it in schools.
The average salary for a translator is estimated to be $43,130 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The income level for translators vary depending on location and term of employment. Many translators may choose to work part-time or freelance.
