A Day in the Life of a Special Education Teaching Back to Top

General special education is an individualized method of teaching special needs students in a way the addresses the needs created by the students learning disability or challenges. This process generally includes systematic and individualized arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and technologies, accessible lesson plans, and other progressive and adaptive methods designed around special needs. Special needs of students include learning disabilities, communication issues, behavioral disorders, emotional and social disorders, and developmental disorders. General special education teachers work directly with students to help them cope with these problems and ensure that they are not left behind in their educational development. The challenge involved is catering programs as closely to the individuals needs while keeping them on track with peers, as well as decreasing the stigma that special needs programs face in the eyes of other students.

A special education teacher must be compassionate and patient with students. They also must be well-versed in alternative methods of education, as well as creative and innovative in their approaches to adaptive education programs. In the United States, all special needs students receive a Individualized Education Program (IEP) fitted to their personal needs. It is also included in the special education teachers job to ensure that the student is included in regular classes as often as possible. Teachers must track and analyze the development of the student in order to modify the program when needed.

All States require special education teachers to be licensed, which typically requires at least a bachelor’s degree and the completion of an approved training program in special education teaching. Some States require a master’s degree. Most States have alternative methods for entry for bachelor’s degree holders who do not have training in education. Licensure varies by state, but often includes a passing a professional test. General special education jobs are expected to grow as programs evolve. In addition, retiring specialists will need to be replaced. The median general special education teacher’s salary is $50,020, with the highest ten percent bringing in over $82,000.
