A Day in the Life of a Social Studies: U.S. History Teacher Back to Top

Overview

US History is taught at virtually every level of school. The foundation for US history begins in Elementary school, and is built upon in middle school, and goes much more in depth in High School. It is important for all Social Studies teachers to find a creative way to convey the history they are teaching to students. At the Kindergarten through Grade 12 level, US History Teachers must prepare lesson plans, give both classroom and individualized instruction, prepare and grade tests, evaluate students, maintain classroom order, meet with parents and administrators, and give grades to the students. Teachers specializing in US History must continually update themselves on new information, books and technology. To teach US History, a teacher must be very familiar with every aspect of American Studies, from the beginning of time until the present day. Social Studies Teachers must be creative, organized, and understand students needs to get their less plans across.

Elementary & Middle School

Elementary social studies lessons often teach students a US hisstory timeline, while focusing on building-up basic reading and reasoning skills. US History class in middle school begins to challenge students to apply their own ideas to the study of America. Social studies lesson plans in middle school should introduce US History concepts more detailed that will be explained even more in depth in High School.

High School

High school US History is generally taught over two years as US History 1 and US History 2. At this point, world history teachers usually expect their students to memorize more material than what would be expected in elementary or middle school. Like most courses in High School, students are expected to analyze facts with connecting the History with Present day issues.

The demand for social teachers is expected to grow over 10% in the next 5 years. To become a Social Studies teacher at any level, there are some requirements. All 50 states require that a public school teacher be licensed. Usually, those teaching a specific course must also have at least a 4-year degree as well as teacher-preparation courses. Many states also have programs that allow college graduates with expertise in their field to obtain a license without taking any additional preparation courses. According to American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a traditional public school social studies teacher earns a salary of just over $51,000. Every state requires that a Social Studies teacher hold a bachelor’s degree and obtain a teaching certificate.
