A Day in the Life of a Science: General Teaching Back to Top
Overview The study of science begins as early as elementary school and develops all the way up through high school and beyond. Students visiting their school nurse may even develop an early interest in the science behind healthcare and may later pursue careers in nursing, as doctors or in a number of other fields. Defined specifically as any systematic knowledge-base or prescriptive practice that is capable of resulting in a prediction or predictable type of outcome, it is a comprehensive study of Earth’s composition and processes, both physical and theoretical, as well as the study of other planets and celestial bodies and their physical and theoretical characteristics. It combines subcategories of scientific fields of study such as geology, environmental science, chemistry, astronomy, mineralogy, oceanography, atmosphere, et cetera. Elementary and Middle School In earlier education, the science instruction dealt with is not as specific and consists of general observation and geography, with limited chemistry and environmental study. An elementary school teacher is mostly responsible for introductory lessons in space observation and earth science. In middle school, studies of chemistry and geology get more specific, though science classes are still less specific in nature. High School and Secondary School In high school, a science teacher begins to deal with in depth lessons in both earth and space science. The National Science Education Standards (NSES) are a set of guidelines for the science education in primary and secondary schools in the United States. Generally, a high school student will study physical geology, geography, botany, physics, astronomy and meteorology, and chemistry, amongst other sub-fields. A teacher will generally specialize one of the subjects, teaching different groups of students the same subject year in and year out. These teachers must have a Bachelor’s degree along with a teacher certification from the state they wish to teach in. Median annual wages of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers ranged from $47,100 to $51,180 in May 2008.
