Overview
Biology is the study of living organisms. Biology encompasses several subfields typically taught in elementary, middle, and high school, including human biology, molecular biology, and ecology.
Elementary and Middle School
Elementary biology is often taught in conjunction with an introduction to chemistry and physics. Through molecular biology, students are taught that living organisms have patterned structures. Within molecular biology, biology teachers cover topics such as cell structure and growth. Ecology and classification of organisms apply the principles learned in molecular biology to a variety of organisms, introducing students to topics such as photosynthesis and respiration, while human biology applies the same principles to the human anatomy, introducing students to topics such as genetics and reproduction.
High School
High school biology offers students a more in-depth analysis of the topics covered in elementary and middle school. Through biology research assignments, high school biology courses provide students with the opportunity to explore additional biological topics such as microbiology, biotechnology, and biomedical issues. AP Biology courses cover three major topic areas: molecules and cells, heredity and evolution, and organisms and populations.
