A Day in the Life of a School Transportation Back to Top

In the vast majority of school districts, children would have no reasonable way of getting to and from school if not for the presence of school transportation services. School transportation comes in a variety of forms, the most common of these being the easily distinguishable big yellow school bus. Additionally, many students take other forms of transportation such as public buses and trains. A district will either purchase or lease school buses and have an internal dispatcher, or they will outsource this duty by hiring a school bus contractor. Simply enough, the duty of a school bus driver is to transport the students to and from school by following a route designated by a dispatcher. The buses themselves are government regulated and maintained, adhering to the highest standards of safety and security for the sake of the millions of students transported every school day. Some transportation jobs along with relevant information follow:
Bus Driver
As of 2004, 71% of American bus drivers were employed by schools. Bus drivers are required to have their Commercial Drivers License (CDL), and often vocational or specific bus training. A driver will hopefully have good interpersonal skills, as they will be interacting with parents and young students. Salary Wizard reports that the median income for a school bus driver in the United States is $30,911.
Dispatcher
Dispatchers send out buses, equipment, and workers to maintain and run bus route. They take logs, records, and schedules for the vehicles they work with. Dispatchers also have say in whether or not there will be delays or cancellations due to inclement weather. They have high school degrees and generally learn more about the job as they begin work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median income for general Dispatchers of $33,850 in 2008.
Requirements often vary for employment, along with payment, depending on state and even district. Without this government maintained industry, many children would not have access to remote schools, or the ability to get out of unsavory surroundings in large cities to receive a better education in smaller suburbs.
