A Day in the Life of a School Maintanence Worker Back to Top
A maintenance employee has the responsibility of maintaining mechanical, electrical, and often technological assets of the school. Expected to conduct general repairs as well as tune-ups and inspections as preventative measures, maintenance employees are proficient with the use of basic hand tools such as hammers and power tools such as drills. They must also be able to perform basic electrical work when needed, as well as maintain equipment and machinery needed by the school. As a maintenance employee, one could expect the following basic duties:
- replace, repair, and re-assemble defective equipment using hand and power tools
- follow checklists in checking drives, belts, fluid levels, et cetera on different mechanisms
- be able to repair wiring, electrical, piping, plumbing, and other equipment problems
- perform routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of many mechanisms to ensure that the building is in good repair and not deteriorating
- operate cutting torches and welding equipment
- ofter times must perform roofing and other structural building repairs
There are many other day to day duties of a maintenance worker, varying on the school buildings needs. A maintenance technician is expected to be hard working, versatile, and savvy with a wide array of tools and mechanisms. Though no higher education is generally required, a maintenance employee must demonstrate general aptitude with the tools, machines, and systems involved in the job. Employers often look favorably upon degrees from vocational and trade schools. Maintenance and repair workers earn a median hourly wage of $16.21 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
