A Day in the Life of a School Librarian & Media Specialist Teacher Back to Top
School Librarians organize both print and non-print resources so that students and teachers alike can better utilize them. A school librarian must select the desired texts and sources and optimize the organization of them for easy access and the most efficient distribution methods. Traditionally a career centered around print media, Librarians and Media Specialists now must be proficient in CD’s, music, computers, internet sources and databases, and computer and internet reference sources.
Most states require a Librarian/Media Specialist to have a Master’s degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association. This degree takes one to two years to complete. A Librarian’s day to day activities include, but are not limited to:
- teach and demonstrate to students and teachers how to search for and retrieve desired media and texts
- search for and select new media to add to existing collection, classified according to subject matter
- supervise assistants who make cards, update computer sources, and other tools that help students find materials
- coordinate programs such as storytelling for children and literacy skills for adults
- collect and organize pamphlets, CD’s, internet sources, books, and reference materials on specific subjects
- write grants and conduct classes
- organize on-line databases and instruct students and teachers how to search for and find media and resources
The median income for school Librarians and Media Specialists was $50,970 as of 2007. Though the industry is predicted to slowly grow, fewer people are joining MLS programs. With veteran employees in the field set to retire, jobs will open up and demand will once again be high. Despite the lower numbers of applicants, schools will continue to need qualified librarians. As media becomes increasingly technological, Librarian/Media Specialists will become more crucial in teaching pupils how to use and access electronic media and reference information. Librarians will always be valued, and the ability to instill good research and organizational skills to the students is much needed and a very rewarding career choice.
