A Custodian, or Janitor, is primarily responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of the academic instituation at which he or she is employed. Mainly employed to keep the building clean and polished, Custodians also often conduct basic maintenance and security of the premises. In a school environment, this job is extremely crucial to the day to day workings because it ensures that everything from toilets to electronics both work and are sanitary and pleasantly clean in appearance. A few of the daily responsibilities of a Custodial Technician are:
- Cleaning floors and carpets of every room
- Cleaning stainless steel such as school kitchen and bathroom surfaces
- Cleaning and maintaining surfaces and floor of lunch room
- Setting up for and cleaning up after auditorium events
- Ensuring sanitary and clean surfaces in classrooms, meeting rooms, bathrooms (toilets, sinks)
- Locking up and setting up alarms and general closing duties
Though many schools employ their own custodian, cleaning services are very often outsourced to individual cleaning companies. A custodian should be an honest, diligent, and persistent worker who takes pride in the ability to maintain and clean a building. According to Indeed.com, the average salary for a custodian is $31,000, and there are few barriers of entry into the trade, other than a solid work ethic, positive attitude, and good performance and employment record. Custodians provide an unsung, yet invaluable service to the school of their employ. In an environment filled with germs and developing immune systems, cleanliness is invaluable.
