A Day in the Life of a School Counselor Teacher Back to Top
Becoming a School Counselor is one of the most effective ways of developing both direction and goals in a young students life. School Counselors provide elementary, middle, and high school level students worldwide with crucial guidance and assistance towards academic, college, and career readiness and competency. Acting as both a counselor and an educator, school counselors provide youth with a source of knowledge and resources that is crucial in dictating the next step in the students life. Also known as a “guidance counselor” or “education counselor”, being a school counselor will help you foster professional and social competency in every student through advocacy, leadership, systemic change, and through collaboration with other professionals as part of a comprehensive and developmental program.
In the United States, school counseling began early in the 20th century, arising out of the vocational guidance movement known as career development. Today, the profession helps lower the gap between traditionally dominant and less fortunate economic backgrounds by providing guidance to students with less inherent emphasis or information on college and career options. Specifically, school counselors provides academic, career, and professional/social development through an implementation of the following tools:
- Direct classroom instruction
- Appraisal based on personality and career assessment test methods
- Individual consultation and counseling to students
- Planning and advising lessons and individual meetings
- Collaboration with schools and careers resulting in large amounts of data and information at the students disposal
In the United States, school counselors provide help for every student, K-12, as one would expect any teacher to do. Generally, a counselor will have a Master’s degree in school counseling from a graduate Counseling Education program. All Counselor Education programs in the United States are accredited by the Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), maintaining standards to assure that all the requirements are met. The median income for a school counselor was $53,750 as of May 2006 according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Overall, the important job of school counseling provides the educator with a great deal of satisfaction and reward. The ability to directly impact the lives of every student and provide information and advice that can impact their entire professional lives makes the job both crucial and gratifying. Man students do not grow up with a background encouraging professional development or higher education, so the demand for qualified school counselors is high.
