Administrative assistants carry out daily administrative tasks and clerical duties to keep the work place well organized. In schools, administrative assistants are responsible for making sure that everything is running and operating smoothly in the office. Their jobs involve receiving and screening phone calls, taking messages, relaying messages, scheduling or canceling appointments and organizing conferences as well as other events. In addition to managing the overall administrative operation of the school, an administrative assistant responsibilities on a daily basis include:

  • compiling information to maintain records related to programs, students, financial activity, budgets, and attendance
  • establishing a filing system for the ease of reviewing, revising, verifying various documents

  • Although administrative duties may seem like simple tasks, administrative assistant skills require tenacity and patience. Most administrative assistant positions require a high school degree and basic office skills. There are a couple of different ways to gain office skills. One can enroll in a typing course for a 1 or 2 year programs. These courses are offered in vocational-technicals schools and community colleges. Administrative skills also require proficient typing, good spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral communication. Administrative assistant career offers administrative assistant salaries that are around the $30K figure in school settings. As an office assistant, administrative assistants in schools have an important role of managing the office and all the clerical activities in the school.
