A Day in the Life of a Religion Teacher Back to Top

Overview

Religion in schools is a very heated topic that many feel should be left out of formal education. Religion is thus rarely found in most public schools, but some private and denominational schools do provide religious consultation and guidance. Religion as a class, however may be taught in upper level high school classes but many times is withheld until the collegaite level of education. The reason that religion is rarely taught in schools is because at the level of social development of the students, many believe that education on religion is too open to the religious bias of the teacher whether it be Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism or another religious belief.

Elementary and Middle School

In denominational schools, times of worship and traditions are often incorporated into the curricula in the school. These periods are to reinforce the religious beliefs of the students to be in line with the religion of their families and that of the school. For many students in public elementary and middle schools, they do not receive religious training, rather the administration leaves religious education to the students place of worship of choice.

High School

Some high schools do provide classes that teach the theory of different religions as opposed to their practice and implementation. These theory courses typically go over the history of the religion, its founders, and sometimes the rituals and practices of the religion. The teachers of high school religion are extremely careful not to come off biased because that could lead to lawsuits against them and the school which could end their career as teachers. High school students are still very impressionable, so teachers are very careful not to demean one religion or another. This impressionability is the main reason why most schools believe that religion education is better suited for the collegiate level. Teachers of religion will either be a priest or minister in the religion or will be normally certified teachers with degrees. At higher levels, teachers will have a Doctorate degree in Religion or religious studies.
