A Day in the Life of a Preschool Teacher Back to Top
Preschool teachers provide initial educational groundwork for children between the ages of 3 to 5. At such a young and impressionable age, these students absorb a great deal of information and skills that will allow them to function well for the rest of their educational lives. A preschool teachers job is to nurture, care for, and instruct these children in order to help prepare them for Kindergarten and the life of a student. A preschool teacher will design a curriculum intended to promote better motor skills, social development, and language skills. This curriculum will focus on hands-on, group activities such as games, arts and crafts, computers, videos, and physical activities designed to introduce children to reading, speaking, mathematics, social situations, and learning skills. Because young children learn best through play, this is a central part of a successful preschool program.
To become a preschool teacher, one must have at least a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), but often have a college degree as well. The requirements vary widely by state, ranging from a high school diploma and adequate caregiver training to national Child Development Associate (CDA) credential to community college courses or a college degree in child development or early childhood education. Because of the vulnerability and sensitivity of young children, a qualified preschool teacher must be patient and compassionate and should enjoy working with young children and fostering basic social and learning skills. Median annual wages of preschool teachers were $23,870 in May 2008. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that jobs should increase immensely through 2018 as turnover will be high.
For information on state requirements, consult your local school district or states educational website, or check the National Association for the Education of Young Children or Council for Professional Recognition links below.
