A Day in the Life of a Political Science Teacher Back to Top
Overview
Political Science classes study several aspects of politics, including democracy, international relations, citizenship, and other aspects of the government. These topics are taught so the student has a better understanding of the world of politics around them. Teachers must incorporate philosophy, history, sociology, theology, and law in their lesson plans to inform students on the prominence of political science. Political Science is a class that is practical for every citizen to understand their duties and the political world they live in.
Elementary and Middle School
In elementary school, Political Science is taught at a very basic level throughout various social studies classes. Elementary students will learn the basics of government and citizenship. In Middle School, the basics are expanded on in more in depth social studies classes. Many middle schools may have a social studies class such as “Civics” which is the study of citizenship, while schools also have “geography” which helps students understand international relations. Whatever the Middle School offers, students are sure to expand their knowledge of Political Science through some sort of Social Studies.
High School
In High School, Political Science is either intertwined in other classes or taught as a specific class. Taught as a specific course, Political Science in high school will examine the laws that govern our society, international relations, and the contrasting governments of the world. A high school political science aims to educate its students with a very thorough base of analysis of politics.
Every state requires that a Political Science teacher to hold a bachelor’s degree and get certified to teach in the state they desire. Teaching jobs for Social Studies classes such as Political Science are excepted to increase in demand by 12% in the next decade (according to bls.gov). The median salary for a Political Science teacher is just over $50,000.
