A Day in the Life of a Physical Therapist Teacher Back to Top
Physical therapists are specialists that deal with the way muscle interacts with bone to keep it steady and allow for proper posture and the ability to move and walk. A physical therapist typically sees patients from all age groups and work through various problems form minor sprains to rehabilitation. A physical therapist has many jobs during the course of evaluation of a patient. These jobs include taking medical history and incorporating it into the current issue, prescribing treatment regimens (most include exercise) and carefully watching the continued development of the condition.
A physical therapist in schools may also take on the role of athletic trainer. Athletic trainers are called in during all sporting events to supervise the athletes and lend their services if anyone gets hurt. They can also supervise activities during gym classes and can consult and practice with doctors, dentists, neurologists, and other health professionals. Most rehab services administered by school physical therapists include massage therapy, stretching, weight training, and exercise. Physical therapists also work with children that have developmental disorders and help them improve their mobility.
To become a physical therapist, a student must take the physical sciences and volunteer in a clinic in preparation for a 2 year master’s or a 3 year doctorate degree. The doctorate degree is preferred to a master’s if the individual would like to start as a physical trainer instead of an apprentice. Licensure for physical therapists vary by state and all states require that a physical therapist pass their state board exams.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary of physical therapists is between $55,030 and $78,080. The large pay scale is due to the location of the school and its athletic department. Those with bigger athletic departments demand more from physical trainers and pay more. Most physical therapists report that their job is very rewarding. They get to see how their hard work improves the lives of students by reducing pain and helping with their mobility. Now is a great time to begin on this greatly rewarding career path as the field of physical therapy is supposed to grow in the coming years.
