Physical therapy assistants help physical therapists carry out daily tasks to provide treatments to their patients. Physical therapists in school settings collaborate with the special education department and the families of students. They work together in order to better diagnosis and treat problems that are getting in the way of a student’s educational curriculum. Physical therapists assess students’ conditions by monitoring the student’s motion, mobility, muscle strength, daily activities such as dressing, and toileting. After thorough evaluation, a meeting with other education personnel and parents, it is the physical therapists job to write specific goals and objectives for the student’s treatment. All the while, the pt assistant is helping in the process.
The physical therapist assistant job involves:
- Conducting therapeutic exercises with patients
- Providing therapeutic massages
- Observing patients and evaluate the patient’s progress
- Fitting supportive devices such as leg braces or crutches
- Performing administrative tasks like answering phones, completing forms and ordering supplies
In order to become a pt assistant, an associate degree from an accredited physical therapist assistant program is required by law in many states. Accredited programs usually last 2 years. Currently there are over 250 accredited physical therapist assistant programs in the country. In addition to studying the theory and practice of physical therapy, pt assistants must have a background in basic medical sciences and core educational courses. Once all these requirements have been met, individuals can start their new careers as pt assistants. Most employers will provide physical therapy assistant training.
Physical therapy salary for pt assistant’s range between $33,840 and $49,010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the next decade, employment in this field is expected to grow by 29 percent and the opportunities are huge. This job may be ideal for candidates who are looking for a career change and love the sound of being able to start their career after just two years of schooling. PT assistants perform a variety of tasks to help make therapy sessions productive while working with individuals on a one on one basis to provide attentive therapeutic treatments.
