A Day in the Life of a Physical Education Teacher Back to Top
Overview
Physical Education is the instruction of healthy living, including physical exercise, health practices, and fitness. Physical Education teachers help organize and supervise students participate in physical fitness. Nearly every school has a physical education teacher from Kindergarten to 12th grade, and most schools require that every student participate in Physical Education Classes if they are able to. Physical education teachers must be good leaders, be able to motivate students, and must exemplify healthy living. They must also be knowledgeable and capable of instructing virtually every sport at an introductory level.
Elementary and Middle School
In elementary school, children often play cooperative games compared to more competitive games later on in their academic career. Elementary students learn the basics of most popular sports, learn to work on a team with their classmates, and play very simple enjoyable games. In middle school, Physical Education teachers instruct students on more obscure games to ensure that students are knowledgeable on a broad range of sports around the world. Students do more hands on physical activity, such as Gymnastics, Badminton, Volleyball, Soccer, and many other sports. Middle School students learn the basics of most games and are often tested on the rules, which will be taught more in depth in high school.
High School
Although most schools still require Physical Education all four years of High School, it is becoming more common for students to opt taking a gym class or not. For those students who do take gym in high school, they are exposed to much more competition and physical activity. High School gym teachers often may double as a Health teacher. If students elect not to take gym, they are usually required to take health which instructs students how to live a healthy lifestyle.
To become a Physical Education teacher, teachers must have Bachelor’s Degree from a credible University and be certified in the state they wish to teach in. The demand for Physical Education Teachers will increase by 12% in the next decade, according to bls.gov. Physical Education teachers earn an average salary a little higher than the average teacher, $45,000 compared to $41,000.
