A Day in the Life of a Music Education Teacher Back to Top
Overview
Music education is the study of every aspect of music. The class can teach students how to read music, how to write music, how to sing or play music, and even the history of music. The class seeks to develop children’s musical motor skills, expand their interpretation of music, and increase their overall appreciation of music. Music education is incorporated into education from preschool and continues into the collegiate level.
Elementary and Middle School
In preschool and elementary school, children will typically learn to play simple instruments such as recorders and keyboard, sing in small choirs, and learn the basics of music elements. In middle school, music education will usually continue to be a requirement. However, extra-curricular activities, such as joining the choir or band, begin to become optional. Most schools offer clubs such as these for children to expand their knowledge of music.
High School or Secondary School
Some school districts will offer more specialized classes in middle or high School, such as music history, music theory, etc.
Musical education teachers must be prepared to:
- Instruct children on basic vocal and instrumental lessons
- Expose students to a wide variety of musical styles and instruments
- Introduce the basics of Musical Theory
- Instruct the children on the History of Music
The level of these lessons will range depending of how specified or advanced the course is. However, these are the general ideas music education teachers need to be familiar with.
To become a music education teacher, one must first hold a bachelor of Arts degree in music, a bachelor of music in music education or another related field, and a state teaching certification in music. Although many schools are struggling with their efforts to fund music and other arts education, the need for musical education teachers is not decreasing. The average elementary school music education teach earns a salary of about $41,000. However, the salary can vary depending on location, experience, and the level of teaching.
