A Day in the Life of a Music: Chorus Teacher Back to Top

Overview

Chorus is a sector of Music Education. Chorus focuses on the vocals of children by teaching the student choir to sing memorized songs as well as sheet music. Chorus teachers may also be the general Music Education teacher and/or the Instrumental teacher. Each level of Chorus becomes more involved and challenging for the student. The majority of school districts require elementary students to take chorus, while chorus becomes optional in middle and high school. Chorus teachers must themselves have a good singing voice, must be energetic, creative, and engaging.

Elementary and Middle School

An elementary chorus teacher begins to introduce children to notes, pitch, rhythm, and other simplistic choral concepts. Often, the teacher will teach the children short songs with few notes to introduce the art of singing. In middle school, choir may begin to become optional. Students may choose to take a choir class which can be an elective or an extra-curricular activity. Middle School choirs begin to sing more difficult songs and introduce harmony which will be built upon in high school.

High School

A high school chorus teacher may direct several choruses, both classes and extra-curricular. Most high schools offer chorus as an elective for the arts. For more dedicated choir students, most high schools have selective choruses that participate in competitions and other performances. High school choir teachers build on the foundation children learned in elementary and middle school. Songs become much more advanced and students must learn to harmonize with one another. To become a Chorus teacher, one must first hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education or another related field, and a state teaching certification in music. The average Elementary School Music Teacher earns a salary of about $41,000. However, the salary can vary depending on location, experience, and the level of teaching.
