A Day in the Life of a Multiple Disabilities Teacher Back to Top

Multiple disabilities are defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as the condition of having two or more disabilities which affect learning or other important life functions. Children are considered to have multiple disabilities by the IDEA if the combination of their multiple disabilities are so significant that their educational and special needs could not be adequately addressed in an environment equipped for one of their learning disabilities. Many children with multiple disabilities suffer from both mental retardation and from sensory impairments, such as poor vision or blindness.

Educating children with multiple disabilities is often both extremely difficult and rewarding. Each child with multiple learning disabilities generally requires an Individual Education Plan, which should be developed together with appropriate professionals. Due to the pervasive nature of multiple disabilities, educators must also develop plans for social – and sometimes physical – development.

Educators and prospective educators interested in working with children with multiple disabilities should be prepared to:

  • Work together extensively with families
  • Create individualized lesson plans and curricula
  • Design collaborative activities for social development
  • Monitor potentially dangerous health conditions
  • Develop alternative assessment procedures

Requirements and standards for educators of children with multiples disabilities vary by state; however, most states consistently require additional specialized preparation and certification for educators. Because of this, there is a high demand in nearly every state for educators of children with multiple disabilities. Additionally, compensation for education jobs related to children with multiple disabilities is generally significantly higher than standard teacher salaries.
