A Day in the Life of a Math: Algebra Teacher Back to Top

Overview

Algebra is the study of mathematics concerned with the rules of operations and relations, and the constructions and concepts arising from them, including terms, polynomials, equations, and algebraic structures. Elementary algebra, most often taught in secondary education, introduces the concept of variables representing numbers. Taught as a required mathematics class in the United States, algebra is often separated into several different units, such as pre-algebra, algebra 1, algebra 2, etc.

Elementary and Middle School

Though algebra is primarily a secondary school subject, introductory courses such pre-algebra are often taught to middle school students. These courses will slowly introduce the concept of polynomials and variables in order to begin to bridge the gap between basic arithmetic and more complicated forms of algebra. Algebra 1 is often taught to middle school students as an honors class.

High School

In high school, students must complete algebra 1, 2, and 3 (otherwise known as trigonometry, or pre-calculus). In general, these courses usually include powers and roots, polynomials, quadratic functions, coordinate geometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, probability, matrices, and basic to advanced trigonometry. Algebra teachers employ different methods of teaching in order to make sure students grasp the concepts, often a tough subject for many students. Teachers employed at the middle and secondary levels must be licensed and have a Bachelors degree in mathematics or a closely related major. The average salary for traditional public school teachers increased 4.5 percent in 2006-07 to $51,009, according to the AFT’s latest teacher salary survey.
