A Day in the Life of a Life Skills Teacher Back to Top

The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined life skills as “abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”. For a child in school, life skills range from adept social abilities and proper learning and problem-solving skills. A life skills teacher is a member of the special education branch of formal education and has the responsibility of assisting students in learning to cope with the challenges and interactions involved in day-to-day life. Life skills-based education promotes positive behavioral and health patterns to instill proper modes of child development. Skills which Life skills educators often include in their curriculum include:

  • self-esteem and sociability
  • tolerance and acceptance of differences
  • taking action to change harmful or disadvantageous situations
  • confidence in formal interaction
  • good problem solving methods
  • general behavioral norms
  • health practices and regulations (sexual health, hygiene)

A life skills teacher will work with all students, but may design curriculum around students with noted behavioral or coping problems, such as social or learning disabilities. While life skills teachers do not practice physical therapy or motor skill improvement through activities, as an Occupational Therapist would, they help students deal with problems in a way that grounds good behavioral and social skills. Special education teachers generally have at least a bachelors degree and relevant outside work experience. The middle 50 percent earned between $40,480 and $63,500 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
