A Day in the Life of a Learning Disabled Teacher Back to Top

A learning disabled child is usually diagnoised to have some form of a learning disability. Students with learning disabilities suffer from problems that affect the brain’s ability to analyze, process, receive or retain information. These problems make it harder on someone with a learning disability to learn as quickly as someone who does not have the disability. There are a list of learning disabilities that differ for each individual, but common learning disabilities fall into the verbal and nonverbal category. Someone with a verbal learning disability may be able to read and write well, but cannot, for the most part, make sense of what they are reading or writing. Nonverbal learning disabilities usually involves someone who is unable to process what they are looking at. For example, they may have trouble making sense of numbers on the board. Contrary to popular belief, the condition does not dictate one’s intelligence. Great historical figures such as Walt Disney, Winston Churchill, and Alexander Graham Bell all had learning disabilities. Schools across the nation have special education programs and qualified teachers who design curricula for learning disabled students.

Special ed teachers help students who have learning disabilities overcome their challenges by using various techniques. They include:

  • giving the student intensive individualized instructions
  • problem-solving assignments
  • assign small group work
  • develop an Individualzed Education Program, a program that sets personalized goals for the student tailored to the student’s need
  • design and teach appropriate curricula
  • grade and evaluate the student’s progress
  • assign homework

Becoming a special educations teacher requires one to have achieved a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and an approved training program in special education teaching. Some states may require special ed teachers to have completed a master’s degree. A special ed teacher typically earns $50K a year. This is subjective to the location, years of experience, and school. There is a growing demand for special education teachers in public, private, and learning diability schools across the nation. Being a special ed teacher can be a rewarding job for those who are passionate about subject. Special ed teachers are experts in their field and help students meet and recognize their specific learning disability needs in learning disabled schools and other schools across the nation.
