A Day in the Life of a Hearing Impaired Teacher Back to Top
Hearing impairment, ranging from slight deficiency to deafness, can be caused by a wide range of biological and environmental forces. For a child, hearing impairment can be extremely crippling both from an educational and social development standpoint. Deaf or “hard of hearing” children can either inherit or develop the impairment. If it is developed, it can happen pre-lingual or post-lingual. In the classroom environment, hearing impairment can be a large obstacle to overcome. The average student faces hardship in intellectual and social development even with the ability to hear.
Thanks to developments in sign-language, telecommunication, and hearing aids, there are many ways to cope with hearing disabilities and deafness. In addition, an electronic device can be planted surgically in the ear to restore hearing to the hearing disabled, though this remains a controversial procedure amongst deaf culture. In schools, children are eligible to receive Individual Education Plans (IEP) depending on the extent of the hearing disability. The teacher or specialist will analyze the disability and the needs of the child and develop a lesson plan around the analysis. There are mixed feelings on what the best way to educate a hearing impaired child, as some want to put their child in the least restrictive learning environment while others think that pulling the child out of general public schools is superior. Schools for the deaf or hearing impaired exist, and can provide lessons and activities using explicitly American Sign Language. The course of action is generally dictated by the will of the parent and the extent of the impairment.
A teacher of the hearing impaired student must be fluent in sign language so as to either translate spoken word of the teacher or dictate lessons in sign. He or she must also make the student as comfortable as possible in the chosen environment and assist the child in their efforts to assimilate to the culture. The teacher will be responsible for the safety and success of the students learning and social development, so they must be dedicated and compassionate. In addition, the instructor must help other students learn and cope with their classmates disability and learn to embrace the diversity he or she brings to the environment.
