A Day in the Life of a Health Teacher Back to Top
Overview
Health classes at the primary and secondary levels are mostly based around two subjects: drug education and sex education. Both of these topic are taught as preventative measures, as students in these classes are beginning to develop both physically and in maturity. Health class is important in helping students understand what is happening during these times of confusion by educating them on the risks of using drugs and engaging in risky sexual behaviors, as well as the physiology of the developing body.
Elementary and Middle School
In elementary school, students are usually taught in conjunction with physical education on how to keep themselves clean and healthy by practicing good hygiene and nutrition. They are also taught when to call 911 in the event of an emergency. This important number is drilled into them to keep themselves and their families safe by knowing that hospital care is always available. With middle school begins the drug and sexual education portions of health class. During this time of development, many students need guidance on what is happening to their body. Health class and school nurses are available to shed light on the natural development process. Drug use prevention starts with the most commonly available chemicals found in household cleaners and prescription medications. The focus then shifts to tobacco and alcohol use and their effects, since these are the most socially acceptable drugs to use. DARE, or Drug Awareness Resistance Education, is often taught in conjunction with local police forces as a means of educating students.
High School
The high school curriculum usually includes education on the effects of more detrimental drugs, such as stimulants and opiates. These illegal substances are extremely dangerous and are educated on their hazards. High school health classes also go over the dangers and punishments tied to driving under the influence, as many students begin to get their driver’s licenses around this time. Sexual education is also continued as many students choose to become sexually active. Prophylactic use and disease education and prevention are typically part of the curricula.
