A Day in the Life of a General Math Teacher Back to Top

Overview

Mathematics are taught to students in the United States starting around the age of five or six up all the way through secondary school and into higher education degree programs. Starting in elementary school, children are taught basic mathematics. The theories and methods involved become increasingly complex as children age. Most schools offer different levels of math classes as they become more challenging, as some students show greater aptitude for the subject than others. There is no set national curriculum, but the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has published a recommended curriculum that is often followed.

Elementary and Middle School

At an early elementary school stage, students are taught basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction). Throughout elementary school, this expands to include multiplication and division and will begin to use a wider variety of digits. In middle school, students begin to deal with basic algebra and the concepts of variables, integers, and polynomials. Most students will have completed some form of pre-algebra and even algebra one by the time they have left middle school, although geometry is sometimes taught as early as eighth grade as an honors course.

High School and Secondary School

In secondary school, general curriculum includes algebra 2 and geometry in ninth and tenth grade. Often at this point in a student’s academic career, individuals will be more aware of their proclivities and abilities, so mathematics are often taught at varying levels of intensity and depth. However, normal curriculum includes the study of algebra 3, otherwise known as trigonometry, around 11th grade. Students will finish secondary school with either pre-calculus or, if they so choose, a course in calculus, often at the honors level. A math teacher will have at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree along with teaching certification from the state he or she chooses to teach in.

In May 2008, median annual wages of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers ranged from $47,100 to $51,180; the lowest 10 percent earned $30,970 to $34,280; the top 10 percent earned $75,190 to $80,970, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
