Overview

English Language Learners programs are also known as English as a second/foreign language (ESL, EFL) and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). As the primary spoken language in a country with a history rich in immigration and cultural diversity, programs for people trying to learn English are an important part of educational development. Programs are offered for people of all ages, but ESL is not part of normal public school curriculum. ESL is a supplementary, comprehensive English language course for students trying to attain a grasp on the language to better function in American society.

Although many children are brought up in families that primarily speak languages other than English, teaching the language to students is rarely a focal point of public school curricula. Instead, ESL is often a supplementary lesson plan completed in addition to other mainstream elementary lessons. However, courses do exist at all levels and for students with all abilities and of all different age groups. ESL teachers may be employed by the public school system. Teachers of ESL must be certified to teach English to speakers of other languages and have completed a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, linguistic Master’s degrees such as Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) are gaining popularity as a way to specialize and become certified to teach English.
