A Day in the Life of a Emotionally Disabled Teaching Back to Top

A student who is emotionally disabled usually suffers from emotional problems that get in the way of the student’s performance and ability to learn in school. Emotionally diabled students often times lack specific social skills to help them adjust to certain social settings. In schools, students with an emotional behavioral disorder are often unable to comply with teachers requests, they can either be needy or have a difficult time asking for assistance. These students suffer from uneven achievements that are caused by anxiety, depression or emotions. They have difficulty making friends and are often viewed as odd among peers. Typically, special ed teachers who monitor and teach these students look at the student’s academic performance, discipline records, and results of achievement tests to evaulate the educational impact this disorder has on the student. In addition, the school will typically conduct various testing for the students who are in or need to be in a special education classroom.

These tests include:

Psychological Testing – by a school psychologist

  • cognitive testing
  • interviews
  • observations

Educational Testing – to determine the student’s academic level

  • reading, writing, math and other areas of study

Sociocultural evaluation or interview conducted by the school social worker to consider environmental factors

After the student is tested, there are several disabled programs and disability resources to help emotionally disabled students. All special education students have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and that includes students with emotional disorders. Teachers and special ed administrators in schools work to develop a plan designed for the special ed student so that they can improve their academic performance. For some students this may require them to schedule regular visits with the school psychologist or social worker. For others, they may be required to learn in a self contained classroom or attend a private school where therapeutic services are a part of the student’s daily school schedule. Schools and teachers across the nation work hard to provide the best educational service for students who have special needs and/or have a developmental disability.
