A Day in the Life of a Consumer & Home Economics Teacher Back to Top
Overview
Home economics is a field of formal study that includes topics such as consumer education, institutional management, interior design, home furnishing, cleaning, handicrafts, sewing, clothing and textiles, cooking, nutrition, food preservation, hygiene, child development, and family relationships. The purpose of home economics, or family and consumer science education, is to prepare students for homemaking by giving them the skills necessary for maintaining and optimizing their independent adult lives. Home economics can be broken down in the following categories, according to Wikipedia:
- an academic discipline to educate new scholars, to conduct research, and to create new knowledge and ways of thinking for professionals and for society
- an arena of everyday living in households, families, and communities meant for developing human growth potential and human necessities
- a curriculum area that facilitates students to discover and further develop their own resources and capabilities to be used in their personal life by directing their professional decisions and actions
- a societal arena to influence and develop policy to advocate for individuals, families, and communities to achieve empowerment and wellbeing, to utilize transformative practices, and to facilitate sustainable futures
High School or Secondary School
Home economics, or family and consumer sciences, is taught primarily in secondary school, although some institutions start this type of instruction in middle school. Most family and consumer science professionals teach in public schools, starting in secondary school and extending even into college and university programs. It is often mandatory for students to participate in home economics classes and to establish and foster the skills needed to maintain a household. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, or FCCLA, is a non-profit establishment for teaching home economics in public schools up to grade 12.
Home economics teachers require a Bachelor’s degree and must be licensed by the state to teach. The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) certifies home economics teachers who have completed a bachelor program and have passed the National Family and Consumer Sciences Examination.
