Overview
Computer science is the study and understanding of how computer programs work and interact in the digital environment. This is not to be confused with vocations such as an information technologist (IT), who works to solve existing program issues. Computer science uses information about how and why programs work in order to improve current programs and create new ones.
Elementary and Middle School
As computers become more widely used on a daily basis, computer science becomes necessary at earlier levels of education. In elementary and middle schools, computer courses familiarize students with commonly used programs and teach them how to incorporate them into their everyday lives. They also teach the science behind computer science in a very broad sense, using overlying principals to explain how computers work. The overlying principals are explained in a way that challenges students to think about how the programs they use affect the rest of the computer’s system.
High School
Many high schools offer computer science classes . These classes are designed to teach students the true inner workings of the virtual environment inside a motherboard. Classes use principles of the virtual environment to create programs in various computer languages, such as java and C++. These programs are made to emphasize different principles of computer science, such as modularity, matrix building, and file storage and retrieval. A computer science teacher will have a Bachelor’s degree, often in computer science, and will be certified to teach computer science by the state.
