Coaching is a method of directing, instructing and training a person or group of people, with the aim to achieve some goal or develop specific skills. Organized youth sports begin between the ages of 5 and 6, and at this level are more often than not coached by motivated and appropriately experienced parents or community members. Beginning generally in middle school, however, schools will have their own sports teams which often require tryouts. These teams will be coached by members of faculty or staff often as a position supplementary to another job within the school. Here, the coach is expected to understand and teach the fundamentals of the sport, while being able to organize practices and game plans and help the children learn and succeed. More importantly, a coach often plays an important role in a child’s development in that they instill a desire to work hard to achieve goals and work as a team to accomplish a common goal.
A school sports coach is often already a teacher with qualifying experience in the sport. Often, coaches start as Physical Education teachers, as schools cannot afford multiple members of individually hired coaching staffs. A coach will be selected by the school and will often be certified to coach. It is sometimes best to break into the coaching scene by instructing youth sports before attempting to coach at the high school or college level. Often times, a coach will work up the ladder by getting involved with a team as assistant or even a former player. Because a coach is generally also a teacher, they must have a Bachelor’s degree and/or be certified by the state to teach children. Coaches earning supplemental contracts earned an average of salary of approximately $2,400 for a year of service, while the median annual salary of full-time coaches is $22,800, according to 2006 averages of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
