A Day in the Life of a Behavior Specialist Teacher Back to Top
Emotional and Behavioral Disorder (EBD) is a broad phrase used commonly in the field of education to classify students who demonstrate certain perceived difficulties in the classroom. These disabilities or difficulties include, but are not limited to Asperger Syndrome, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD). In the classroom, EBD often results in antisocial, disruptive, and chaotic behavior which impedes the educational process for both the student and his or her peers. Though commonly problematic for teachers, students with EBD have every right to an education. Because of this teachers or special education professionals such as Behavior or EBD specialists have the job of developing methods of learning catered to the children or finding ways to limit or control the unruly behavior.
While children with more severe learning disabilities such as Autism may need to receive separate specialized attention from EBD specialists, there are ways of developing and maintaining classroom activities as a means of controlling some antisocial behavior. For instance, as ADHD becomes a more recognizably widespread disorder, teachers can give these students alternate responsibilities such as a job chart, or routines which help organize the child’s daily activity. The EBD wikipedia page provides some interesting methods for dealing with children with EBD in a way that optimizes the experience of the student as well as his or her peers. A Behavior or EBD specialist will work hard to make sure that each student gets the attention and treatment specific to their observed disorder to ensure that they get the most out of their education possible. Ideally, classroom teachers and EBD specialists will be able to collaborate to control and treat students emotional or behavioral problems.
