A Day in the Life of a Autism Teacher Back to Top

Autism is a brain based disorder that affects many areas of development including speech, social interactions and the ability to live independently. The disorder is often described as a spectrum because its severity varies from individual to individual. Many autistic children need help in developing skills such as verbally expressing their ideas, understanding what emotions others are feeling, getting dressed, and using a restroom. This is why special education teachers that are specialized in autistic children are so important.

Many special education teachers that focus on autism work in and with schools to server their special needs. Their goal is to help the children get out of the special education classes and into the main population of students with the tools necessary to be effective students. A special education teacher accomplishes this by performing a variety of functions for their students. Depending on the severity of autism defines the roles the teacher needs to fill. Some children with less severe autism only have speech or social problems, so the role of the teacher is to help hem communicate what they are feeling and be able to identify and react to communication from others. Other children who have more severe cases will need the special education teacher to help them learn how to take care of themselves by teaching general hygiene and how to put on clothes. It often takes time for these children to get a hang of the lessons being taught, but the teachers say that once they pass these milestones, the accomplishment is worth the time.

A teacher that wants to work with autistic kids needs to go through the proper certification. Typically a teacher needs to have a strong background in special education teaching. this can start as early as a bachelor’s degree in special education. Most states require at least a master’s in special education and at least a year of field training to work with autistic students. Each state also has their own requirements for licensure including passing a standardized exam.

According to the national bureau of statistics, the average special educaiton teacher can earn anywhere between $40,480 and $63,500. This number is slightly raised for teachers that have experience with a particular disorder. The job outlook for autism educators is very favorable becuase a cheif comlaint of many schools is the lack of special education qualified teachers. There are also many job openings because many special education teachers go on to general teaching after a few years of working in special education.
