A Day in the Life of a Athletic Director/Administrator Teacher Back to Top

Many High Schools, Colleges, and Universities have an Athletic Director which oversees the activities of the coaches, athletes, and related staff involved in the school’s athletic program. Athletic Directors provide guidance and supervision for a school’s sports program. They work with coaches and directors, both at their own school and with competing schools, to determine the scheduling of the multiple practices, games, and tournaments that will fit into the conference and school’s schedule. The Athletic Director job also includes preparing a budget and determining the amount of money allocated to each sport, including equipment, facilities, coaches’ salaries, and travel. At the High School level, Athletic Directors typically work with teachers and school administrators to ensure that student athletes are academically in good standing. Unlike coaching, an Athletic Director is often a full-time position. They must also make sure that coaches and the facilities follow the conference rules. Some of the challenges Athletic Directors face include staying on top of state and conference rules, dealing with concerns of parents, students, teachers, and coaches, and pressure from changing budgets.

At the Middle School and High School level, Athletic Directors usually begin their career as teachers and coaches. Athletic Directors, or Activities Directors typically complete a bachelor’s degree in education, physical education, or a related field before completing a master’s degree in something such as education administration. At the High School level, a typical Athletic Director Salary is about $50,000, while at the college level the salary averages $100,000. If you are an organized person, who is passionate about students, athletics, and leadership, a career as an athletic director may be a good fit.
