A Day in the Life of a Arts: Drama Teacher Back to Top

Overview

A drama teacher educates his/her students in different acting styles, methods, and techniques. Teaching drama means training students how to communicate, control and project their voices and present themselves. The responsibilities of a drama educator may include creating lesson plans, teaching students about plays and theater history, assisting students in creating their own dramatic pieces, organizing and managing the learning environment, directing performance rehearsals, helping to set-up and manage lighting and sets, and assessing students’ performance.

Elementary School

For elementary school students, there are many ways theater can be incorporated into the classroom. Teachers can have children create with made-up characters or have them perform simple monologues in front of the class. Teachers can also have students do reader’s theater, which is the dramatic reading of a play without staged movements. Classes can also play theater games for fun, while channeling a child’s creativity, imagination, and performance skills.

Middle School and High School

Generally, in middle school and high school, students put on a full length play or musical. In addition to this, students can be exposed to drama as an elective or as part of an English class. Overall, the goals of exposing this age group to drama class are far deeper than just learning to be a great actor or actress. Drama teachers at these grade levels should aim to help students use their body and voice expressively, develop sensory awareness and creativity, cooperate in teams to solve problems and resolve conflict, place the self in others’ contexts, observe and criticize the work of other classmates and performers, and to boost self confidence.
