A Day in the Life of a Arts: Dance Teacher Back to Top
Overview
Behind every great dancer, there is a great teacher. With the arts in education becoming a trend within schools across America, many semi-professional and professional dancers can find steady and rewarding work teaching dance in a school setting. Since dance is a subjective art form in which there are varying levels of experience among students, one who wishes to teach dance in a school setting needs to have the proper education and credentials. The National Association of Schools of Dance plays a major role in accrediting programs to teach and certify those interested in Dance Education by providing curricular standards for credentials and degrees in conjunction with the US Department of Education. A prospective student of a Dance Education program should check to make sure that the schools they are interested in are up to the standards of the NASD.
Elementary, Middle School, and Secondary School
There are an increasing number of opportunities to teach dance both in and outside of the curriculum. In elementary schools, dance is generally taught by the classroom teacher, although a specialist can be brought in to teach as well. In secondary schools, however, there are many opportunities to teach dance as an individual subject as well as combine it with other subjects, such as physical education or drama. A number of new initiatives have helped to strengthen the place of dance in schools and have led to an increase in the provision of extracurricular dance clubs.
To obtain a dance teacher certification, a degree in education and state teacher certification are necessary as well as proof of dance knowledge and expertise, usually a degree in dance. To teach in a private school, teacher certification may not be necessary. There are various programs in colleges and universities across the country offering accredited dance education programs, which are an appropriate mixture of dance and teacher education courses in preparation for certification. Salary for dance teacher depends on job responsibilities and district of employment, but typically ranges between $44,000 and $54,000 and can change depending on qualifications and experience. If you are a dancer and you want to teach and inspire students of all ages and ability levels in a school setting, then becoming a dance teacher is an excellent career choice.
