Overview

Art is a mandatory part of American school curriculum as mandated by the national education reform program “No Child Left Behind”. For many students, art classes provided in schooling is the primary source of art education and is therefore an essential part of public and private school core curriculum. In many schools, art programs seek to establish skills in crafts, design, painting, and other visual artistic expression.

Elementary and Middle School

For elementary school students, art classes seek to foster interest as well as skill in many different forms of art. Though the specific design of an art class is often left up to the teacher, art programs generally include basic drawing, painting, finger painting, crafts, mosaic making, lessons with scissor, tape, and other construction materials, etc. In middle school, art classes continue to help students improve basic art skills, while introducing concepts in art history and theory. At this level, art lessons are still basic and intended to establish a solid grounding in art.

High School or Secondary Education

In high school, art forms taught expand to include other visual forms. This often includes video, photography, and other technology based art. In addition, art theory becomes a focal point. Art becomes more of a study than an activity, as paintings and their painters are studied and art history becomes a topic of discussion. Art teachers must be certified to teach by the state, and usually have a Bachelor’s degree in addition to a teaching license.
