A Day in the Life of a After School Programs Teacher Back to Top

After school programs are programs for children to participate in outside of the traditional school day. Often run by the school itself or an outside commercial or non-profit organization, the programs are designed to give kids the chance to participate in activities, games, or other organized pastimes. Kids after school programs traditionally give children a place to go if they have working parents and would otherwise be alone or getting into trouble of one form or another. Juvenile malfeasance hits a peak after school, so after school programs of all sorts are integral to keeping children on a track to success. In addition to helping children avoid trouble, after school programs have statistically shown to improve academic prowess amongst participants.

Successful programs are run by well-qualified adults, often teachers, who pass a background check and are certified to handle large groups of children. These programs work best when they respond to the needs of the community. Whereas some programs are held in affluent and relatively crime free areas; others exist in neighborhoods with rampant crime and drug use, not necessarily stressing strong academic performance. Programs must respond to this change in environment and instructors must beable to adapt to the needs of the children enrolled in the program.  Notable national programs include the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the National Afterschool Association, but other programs exist which seek out funding for local programs to be hosted by appropriately trained adults.

The average salary of an after school instructor is $31,000 according to indeed.com. An after school instructor must be exceedingly patient and understanding, as children can be difficult to work with and come from very diverse backgrounds. In addition, children may cope differently with their home lives, so an after school instructor must be compassionate and a positive influence in the child’s life.
