A Day in the Life of a Adaptive Physical Education Teacher Back to Top

Adaptive physical education is physical education which has been modified to fit the needs and abilities of special needs children with gross motor skill disabilities and delays. Adaptive physical education teachers develop lesson plans that will allow the special needs children to participate in physical activities and sports at their own level of physical ability. In addition, an adaptive physical education teacher will gather data in order to assess the students improvement and ability. Through adaptive physical education, a student with a disability is able to participate in physical education activities with other non-disabled students without problems for either party. An adaptive physical education teacher’s job consists of:

  • Developing modified lesson plans for mutual participation of special needs and non-disabled students
  • Gathering and analyzing data to assess the development of the special education student
  • Increased attention to special needs students to ensure that goals of adaptive physical education students are being met
  • Creating activities and sports either for mutual participation or separate or individual lessons
  • Directly dealing and managing physical education lessons for both disabled and non-disabled students

Because the needs of both sets of students must be met, the ideal adaptive physical education teacher must be personable, patient, active, adaptable, and must think outside the box in order to change and optimize activities. The Adaptive Physical Education National Standards (APENS) exam was created to ensure that all teachers become certified and are knowledgeable of the national standards required for the job. The minimum qualifications to take the exam are: a bachelor’s degree in physical education, 200 hours of experience providing adapted physical education services, one three credit survey course in adapted physical education, and a valid teaching certificate. The test will help provide a benchmark for the field and establish a means of ensuring that the best and most qualified educators will be hired. According to collegetoolkit.com, the mean salary for adaptive physical education specialists is $40,770.
