An accountant or bookkeeper has the job of making sure that the school has all of its debits (costs) and credits (income) in line. In order to manage and track the schools general ledger, the accountant or bookkeeper must update and audit the schools financial records, making sure to reconcile them with the expenses and income of that financial period. Like any business, a school has a budget to maintain and adhere to, and a bookkeeper must make sure that the debits and credits balance and that the school is in line with the budget established. The tasks that a bookkeeper or accountant can expect to perform include:
- Recording all debits and credits the school incurs
- Preparing financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements, and cost flow summaries for management to review
- Prepare bank deposits by compiling data
- Control payroll, prepare invoices, keep track of overdue accounts
- Verify and reconcile financial records
A desirable accountant or bookkeeper will be hardworking and diligent, but most importantly must pay meticulous attention to detail and be mathematically adept. Though some schools have hired bookkeepers with only a high school diploma, it is becoming an increasing trend to have a Bachelor’s degree or at least Associate’s degree in business, accounting, or a closely related field. Accountants and bookkeepers earn a median salary of $32,510, with the middle 50% earning between $26,350 and $40,130. Keeping finances in line and honest is very important for schools. With funding always low, budgeting is extremely important.
