State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Tennessee Department of Education maintains its own Tennessee Teacher Employment Resource, which allows individuals in search of teaching jobs in Tennessee to browse teaching vacancies by school, region, and specialty. User accounts are free, and enable users to upload resumes for local school district recruiters to view. Tennessee also recruits prospective teachers through its Troops-to-Teachers branch. Tennessee’s governor recently launched a new program called Teach Tennessee, which recruits mid-career professionals and retirees for Tennessee teaching jobs, with an emphasis on Tennessee’s high-need subject areas: mathematics, science, and foreign languages.

Salary & Incentives

Tennessee ranked 34th in the nation in 2007 with an average teacher salary of $43,815. Tennessee follows a salary schedule for teachers that begins with $22,645 for first-year teachers with no college credit, and ends with a $51,955 minimum for teachers with a doctorate degree and 20 or more years of teaching experience.

Professional Development

The Tennessee Department of Education provides a number of professional development resources for educators in Tennessee, including a calendar of workshops and conferences. In accordance with the 2003 Master Plan for Tennessee Schools, many Tennessee schools have started mentoring programs and job-embedded professional development programs.

Benefits & Retirement

The Tennessee Consolidate Retirement System (TCRS) provides teachers with retirement benefits as well as death and disability benefits.  TCRS determines benefits based on a teacher’s high five-year average salary and years of service.  Members become eligible to retire at the age of 60 with five years of service or at any age with 30 years of service.  A reduced retirement benefit is available to vested members with five years of service who become disabled and cannot engage in gainful employment.
