State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD) runs an online teacher placement database. Individuals in search of teaching jobs in South Dakota are able to create free accounts, browse available teaching positions, and submit resumes to local school district recruiters. More than 190 schools recruit teachers from the ABSD teacher placement database, which is updated daily. ABSD also publishes its own list of available education jobs online. The Dakota ASSETS Program recruits individuals for teaching positions in high-need areas, offering incentives which include scholarships and tuition assistance for continuing education, and childcare for young children. Rapid City Area School District, the largest school district in South Dakota, has partnered with Black Hills State University to create Project Select, a teacher preparation immersion program for mid-career professionals. Additionally, many schools in high-need areas of South Dakota recruit heavily through Teach for America, and through Troops-to-Teachers.

Salary & Incentives

South Dakota ranked 50th in the nation in 2007 with an average teacher salary of $35,378. Though South Dakota has ranked 50th for teacher pay for over 25 years, the South Dakota Department of Education recently launched the Teacher Compensation Assistance Program (TCAP), which promises to increase teacher salaries and benefits for South Dakota teaching jobs. South Dakota recently began offering loan cancellations for teachers in shortage areas.

Professional Development

The South Dakota Office of Accreditation and Teacher Quality runs the Teacher-to-Teacher Support Network (TTSN), an online mentoring program for new teachers. A number of universities in South Dakota recently collaborated to create online professional development programs for South Dakota teachers, through which individuals may obtain secondary certification in a variety of subjects. The Teacher Incentive Plus Program rewards teachers in roughly 10 school districts with grants for completing professional development courses.

Benefits & Retirement

The South Dakota Retirement System (SDRS) provides retirement benefits totaling 70-85% of teachers’ salaries, if they have completed at least 30 years of full-time service. The SDRS website provides a number of valuable resources for retirement planning.
