State Teaching Job Initiatives
The State of Oregon Jobs Page allows individuals in search of teaching jobs in Oregon to browse jobs available in Oregon in a number of fields by specialty and by region. The Oregon Department of Education also publishes a list of resources for Oregon teaching jobs, including job applications, tips, and links to external job banks. Additionally, the Oregon Professional Educator Fair (OPEF), a statewide education job fair, maintains its own website, which includes information on OPEF, as well as online registration forms.
Salary & Incentives
Oregon ranked 15th in the nation in 2007 with an average teacher salary of $51,080. Oregon follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level.
Professional Development
The Oregon Department of Education offers a variety of professional development opportunities for Oregon teaching jobs, which are updated daily on the department’s professional development calendar. The Oregon Department of Education has also partnered with outside organizations in order to provide Oregon teachers with additional professional development opportunities, including the EdTech Professional Development Cadre and Oregon DATA mentoring programs.
Benefits & Retirement
Oregon public school teachers enjoy extensive benefits, including comprehensive medical and dental plans with premiums currently covered in full for employees and dependents, fully paid employee basic life insurance, group-based premiums for optional life, disability, and long-term care insurance, optional short-term disability plan, optional long-term care insurance for self, spouse, and parents, an innovative employee assistance program, and sick leave earned at the rate of 8 hours per month with no maximum accumulation. For vacations, Oregon teachers receive 9 paid holidays per year, 24 hours personal leave per year, and vacation leave earned at a minimum rate of 8 hours per month. Teachers are also automatically qualified as members in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)/Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan (OPSRP), which includes 6% employer paid contribution into a defined contribution program, the option to enroll in a pre-tax flexible spending account for dependent day care, and the option to enroll in the Oregon Savings Growth Plan, a deferred compensation program offering a wide variety of investment options.
