Individuals must first register a free account, and are then able to browse teaching jobs in Ohio by location and specialty, and submit applications to school recruiters. The Ohio Department of Education also publishes its own list of available jobs. Salary & Incentives

Ohio ranked 13th in the nation in 2007 with an average teacher salary of $53,536. Ohio school districts follow a salary schedule for minimum teacher pay, beginning with $17,300 for first-year teachers with no college degree, and culminating at $32,460 for teachers with 11+ years of experience and a master’s degree. Actual teacher salaries are typically considerably higher than these minimums; a sample salary schedule in the most recent Ohio teachers collective bargaining agreement listed starting pay for first-year teachers holding a bachelor’s degree at $31,514, and salaries for veteran teachers with 27+ years of experience, a master’s degree, and 30 additional college credit hours at $66,479. The Ohio Department of Education also rewards several teachers each year with a number of monetary awards, including the Awards of Merit, and Ohio Teacher of the Year Award.

Professional Development

The Ohio Department of Education offers a variety of professional development programs for teachers, which help both to enhance teacher quality and to meet certification and licensure requirements. In addition to National Board Certification, the Ohio Department of Education runs the System to Achieve Results for Students (STARS) Program, the Professional Development for Early Childhood Teachers Program, and several mentoring programs for new teachers.

Benefits & Retirement

Benefits and retirement for Ohio public school teachers are handled by the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS). Prior to retirement STRS provides counseling and planning services, as well as survivor protection for teachers after 1.5 years of service, and disability protection after 5 years of service. The Retirement Incentive Plan allows employees at Ohio teaching jobs to retire at age 50 with 30 years of service, at age 55 with 25 years of service, and at age 60 with 5 years of service.
