State Teaching Job Initiatives

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) plans on hiring upward of 100,00 new teachers over the course of the next decade. NCDPI maintains an online application system for teaching jobs in North Carolina, which allows prospective teachers to search for and browse jobs by location and by specialty. The online application system also provides links to school district websites, which often post their own available teaching positions. Salary & Incentives

North Carolina ranked 27th in the nation for teacher pay in 2007 with an average salary of $46,137. North Carolina public schools follow salary schedule for teacher pay. The 2009-2010 version of the salary schedule increases pay for each year of teaching experience up to 32 years, and for the degree level held by teachers. Salaries range from $30,430 for first-year teachers with a bachelor’s degree, to $60,340 for teachers with at least 32 years of teaching experience and a doctorate degree. North Carolina offers additional salary incentive for teachers who opt to mentor new teachers, and for teachers who become National Board Certified Teachers.

NCDPI organizes a variety of professional development opportunities for public school teachers in North Carolina. Though specific events vary by school and by district, the NCDPI publishes calendars and directories for professional development opportunities.

Benefits & Retirement

North Carolina public school teachers become vested in the state retirement system after 5 years of service. Additional benefits include longevity pay, extended sick leave, personal leave, family medical leave, state health plan coverage (full coverage after 20 years of service), disability income, and 1-2 vacation days per month, which accumulate when unused.
