Salary & Incentives

Nebraska ranked 43rd in the nation for teacher pay in 2007 with an average salary of $42,044. Nebraska school districts each follow their own salary schedules for teachers, which increase pay for years of experience and for college degrees held. In 2009, Nebraska school district salary schedules began with just under $30,000 for first-year teachers with a bachelor’s degree, and led to $55,000-$60,000 for teachers with at least 15 years of teaching experience, a master’s degree, and at least 36 additional college credit hours.

Professional Development

The Nebraska Comprehensive System of Personnel Development (CSPD) helps coordinate preservice and inservice training for teachers in Nebraska. Specific activities and programs vary by district, though they generally consist of 1-2 day workshops. Last year, professional development opportunities led by the CSPD included mentoring programs for new teachers, summer training for teachers, and visiting teacher programs.

Benefits & Retirement

Nebraska public school teachers are covered by the Nebraska School Pension Plan administered by the Nebraska Public Employees’ Retirement System. Under the plan, teachers are eligible for full retirement benefits at age 65, or at age 60 with at least 5 years of service for reduced benefits. Retirement funds are determined by years of service, and by the average of a teacher’s 3 highest 12-month periods of compensation.
