Salary steps are generally roughly $1,000 for each year of teaching experience, and $1,000-$5,000 for each degree level (bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, doctorate). Teachers with 25 years of experience are given an extra salary bump. The 2009-2010 teacher salary schedule for Mississippi starts with $30,900 for a first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree, and continues to $64,870 for a teacher with 35+ years of teaching experience and a doctorate degree. Mississippi also honors several teachers each year with awards and grants.
Professional Development
The Mississippi Teacher Center provides information on the Mississippi Beginning Teacher Support Program, a mentoring and induction program for prospective teachers in Mississippi. The Office of Leadership & Professional Development provides professional development opportunities are available to teachers of all levels through both classroom workshops and e-learning courses.
Benefits & Retirement
Mississippi public school teachers age 60 or older, with at least 25 years of teaching experience are eligible for full retirement benefits for life under the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS). Retirement benefits are calculated using average compensation and years of creditable teaching service. PERS also handles health and medical insurance for Mississippi teacher retirees.
