State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education runs the Massachusetts Educators Career Center, a free online service for individuals in search of teaching jobs in Massachusetts. Through the Massachusetts Educators Career Center, users are able both to search and browse for Massachusetts teaching jobs by specialty and by location, and to submit applications online for teaching positions. The Massachusetts Department of Education also publishes its own list of available jobs online.

Salary & Incentives

Massachusetts ranked 7th in the nation for teacher pay in 2007 with an average salary of $58,178. Average salaries for Massachusetts teaching jobs jumped to $64,166 in 2009 – an increase of over $10,000 since 2004 – continuing a trend of increasing teacher pay in Massachusetts. Individual school districts follow teacher salary schedules that increase pay for years of teaching experience, and for college degree level.

Professional Development

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education established a system of Professional Development Points (PDP’s) for teacher license renewal. PDP’s are earned through the successful completion of professional development activities, which are generally run by individual schools or school districts. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education publishes detailed guidelines and resources for PDP’s.

Benefits & Retirement

Massachusetts public school teachers are eligible for retirement benefits administered by the Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System at age 55 with at least 10 years of creditable teaching service, or at any age with at least 20 years of creditable teaching service. Benefits are calculated using years of creditable service, age at the time of retirement, and the average of a teacher’s highest three consecutive years’ salaries.
