State Teaching Job Initiatives

The State Of Louisiana Department of Education’s website aims to develop and administer human resources information for current and prospective teachers. The state also maintains the site Teach Louisiana which lists teaching vacancies, certification requirements, and more information on how to become a teacher in Louisiana.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, Louisiana ranked 39th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $42,816. Louisiana follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level. In 2009, the Louisiana teacher salary schedule set minimums for teacher pay ranging from $11,095 for first-year teachers with 2-year college degrees, to a $26,020 minimum for veteran teachers holding doctorate degrees. Actual salaries are usually far above the minimum, with the average salary for a teacher with 5 years of teaching experience and a bachelor’s degree as high as $45,000 in some districts.

Professional Development

Louisiana follows the National Staff’s Development Council’s standards for Staff Development. This council is widely recognized as the leading national council for staff development. The standards are based on three questions: What are the students expected to know and be able to do? What are teachers expected to know and be able to do to ensure student success? Where must staff development focus to meet both of these goals? The Louisiana Staff’s Development Council is a branch of this council, and goes into more detail on their Professional Development Page.

Benefits & Retirement

Louisiana teachers become vested in the state retirement system after 10 years of service. The employee required contributions to the Louisiana State Retirements Employees Agency is currently 7.5% of the gross salary. The state also contributes 15.8% to the teacher’s retirement fund. Other benefits include health insurance, sick and annual leave, paid holidays, and promotional opportunities.
