State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Kentucky Department of Education’s website enables current and prospective teachers to learn about the education system in Kentucky. The site includes calendars, job opportunities, and other useful information for teachers. There is a large teacher shortage in many rural areas of Kentucky, and the state is offering loan benefits as one of the many incentives for teachers to teach in these areas.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, Kentucky ranked 35th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $43,787. Compensation for Kentucky teaching jobs has continued to rise, with the average annual base salary for teachers in 2009 at $46,417.  Kentucky follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level. For the 2009-2010, minimum salaries range from $23,848 for first-year teachers with minimum qualifications, to $44,857 for teachers with at least 20 years of teaching experience, and the highest level of Kentucky teacher certification.

Professional Development

The state of Kentucky requires teachers to complete a 4-year preparation program that includes both student teaching and testing. Kentucky also requires that teachers continually take exams and renew their certification. The Educational Professional Standards Board is responsible for issuing and renewing all certifications for teachers. Kentucky requires at least 4 days of each school term to be used for building Professional Development. To learn more about Kentucky’s Professional Development, check out their Professional Development Page.

Benefits & Retirement

Kentucky teachers become vested in the retirement system after 5 years of service. Kentucky’s Teacher Retirement Estimator estimates the benefits any given teacher may receive depending on their age and credentials. Additional benefits Kentucky teachers receive include health care coverage, annual and sick leave, and vacation days. The KTRS, Kentucky Teacher’s Retirement System aims to provide members with additional benefits. To learn more about benefits and the Kentucky Teacher Retirement System, visit KTRS site.
